Medical emergencies in hospitality can happen quickly. Whether it's a patron who has fallen, someone choking, or a staff member experiencing a sudden illness, the first few minutes can make a real difference - even save a life.
Under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulation, workplaces are required to provide adequate first aid equipment, facilities, and trained responders appropriate to the risks present. The SafeWork NSW Code of Practice: First Aid in the Workplace provides guidance on how to meet these obligations. While compliance is essential, the real goal is to create a system of readiness that works in your specific venue.

Kitchens, bars, and high-traffic areas carry unique risks including cuts, burns, slips and falls, allergic reactions, and intoxication - related incidents. Automates External Defibrillators (AEDs) should be visible, accessible, and regularly tested, and first aid responders should be available across all shifts.
Practical steps your venue can take today include:
- - Review first aid kits and replace any expired or missing items
- - Ensure trained first aiders are rostered across all shifts
- - Make AEDs clearly visible and maintain a regular testing schedule
- - Display signage for first aid kit locations and responders contacts
- - Include basic emergency response guidance in staff induction and refresher training
